BEGINNER'S CROCHET CLASS
Instructor: KAYTEE SUMIDA
FREE ~ bring your own supplies
Learn to crochet! Session includes chaining, single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) stitches. Basically
this is all you need to know to make items like mufflers, caps, throws, and much more. Crochet is relaxing and
satisfying. Open to all. Kids who can follow directions and work independently welcome.
Project to be completed in class: A square made by combining the two basic stitches. If you use cotton
yarn, this can be a dish or wash rag. Directions for making a scarf using the same stitches will also be given,
and most people will probably have time to get one started if they bring yarn for one. Instructor will have
samples of other crocheted projects and display books and magazines with a variety of patterns.
Supplies needed: Crochet hook size H, I, J, or K and a skein of smooth, worsted weight yarn. (Available at
shops like Michael's, JoAnn's, Wal-Mart.) Get a light or bright color of yarn for your first project because they
are easier to work with;no dark colors like black or navy. Suggested yarns: Red Heart "Super Saver," Caron
"Plush" or "Jewel Box," Lion Brand "Suede" (non-bulky version)... or worsted weight cotton yarns like "Peaches
and Creme." Kaytee will have some inexpensive yarns from the temple's White Elephant Store, but selection
will be limited. At least bring your own crochet hook to assure your participation.
Instructor Kaytee Sumida is a practitioner of many types of crafts and served as the Bead Society of San
Diego County's president from 2000 to 2002. She has shown and sold her work at local art shows and
galleries, and earned ribbons at the San Diego County Fair. She runs the BTSD's White Elephant Store.
~ This class is free and open to the public
